Biography

Shelley Hannigan is a Senior Lecturer in Art Education. She has been working as an academic, arts educator and researcher at Deakin since 2008.

Her specialist area is visual and media art but she also researches and teaches in Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary areas such as Arts-Health and STEAM. She is a practicing artist and has a background in working as an art therapist in hospitals as well as teaching art in community and secondary colleges.

Her arts-practice led research explores environmental and sustainability issues with found objects, collage, mixed media, textiles and experimental film. She is interested in theories of materiality, embodiment and place as artist/educator/researcher. Her research publications have explored theory and practice in: Place, Identity, practice, student wellbeing, teacher wellbeing, arts health and arts-science. Methodologies have included: narrative inquiry, case study, autoethnography, collaborative self-study, arts practice led research, arts based research and arts based inquiry in education and health.
